The key engineering question is hollow and through-bore geometry. The center interface carries torque and also establishes how the sun gear is located relative to bearings, the carrier and the mating planets.
A dimensionally correct interface can still produce poor tooth contact if it is eccentric to the external gear teeth. Fits and datums therefore belong in the same review as the gear geometry.
Practical design and replacement implications
For replacement work, measure the mating shaft or hub when possible. Service wear can change spline tooth thickness, keyway condition or bore size and should not be copied into the new drawing.
