Splined Sun Gear Interfaces: What to Measure

The spline can be as important as the gear teeth. A correct sun gear must both mesh with the planets and fit the drive shaft or hub.

Splined Sun Gear Interfaces: What to Measure

Spline identity

State the governing spline standard or provide a complete tooth definition, not only the major diameter.

Fit and datum

Spline fit, effective length, runout to the gear teeth and axial shoulder locations influence assembly.

Inspection

Define whether spline gauges, over-pin measurements or runout reports are required.

Use the drawing as the controlled record

A technical guide can explain which variables matter, but the final sun gear must be approved from the actual drawing and operating requirement.

If a value is missing, identify it for confirmation instead of copying a dimension or material from a different supplier or gear family.

RFQ checklist

Send the sun gear drawing or measured tooth data, mating planet/ring information, interface dimensions, material/process requirements, duty, quantity and destination.
