For an existing sun gear shaft, measure the complete shaft stack-up including journals, shoulders, spline or key features and their runout to the gear teeth. Photos are useful for context, not dimensional approval.
Integrated shaft geometry expands the inspection scope
Bearing seats, shoulders, threads and splines become part of the same datum chain as the sun gear teeth, especially after heat treatment.
For integrated sun gear shafts, process planning has to protect the relationship among gear teeth, bearing seats and shaft features across the full part length. Replacement measurement should therefore include the whole datum chain, not only the damaged gear section.
Material and heat-treatment requirements should be coordinated with post-treatment straightness and finishing needs. When the source is incomplete, provide torque, speed and bearing/support information to explain which surfaces are function-critical.
